The commitment ceremony had gone off without a hitch. Priestly and the rest of the Beach City Grill crew had now seen rather a whole lot more of Trucker and Zo than they'd ever thought they would, but the horses didn't seem to mind much, and they were now both dressed again in very nice, matching linen outfits, and Priestly was reminding himself just why he was a punk instead of a hippie.

"If I ever get married," he said to Jen as they all gathered around a bonfire not far from the waves, "I'm so not going with matching outfits."

"If you ever get married," Jen said, leaning towards him from where she was snugged up again the guy Priestly was never NOT going to think of as Fuzzy, "you're going to be the one wearing the white dress."

Priestly tilted his head. "That's probably true." He looked across the fire to where Tish was showing Julia how to play cat's-cradle and tried not to sigh.

When in doubt, draw attention to yourself. He stood up, lifting his beer bottle high. "I'd like to propose a toast!"

The group groaned cheerfully. This was fifteenth or sixteenth toast of the night.

"To good friends," Priestly continued, gesturing around at the group with his beer. "To finding the perfect partner," this to Trucker and Zo specifically, who grinned back at him like fools. "And . . . to setting things on fire!" And he flung his beer bottle into the flames and threw his hands in the air. "WOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

There was a faint possibility he was overdoing it, yes.

"WOOOOOOOOOO!" Dinah joined in with the yell after she stopped giggling. Hey, it was a party. Why not. The horses weren't there to be scared any more.

Except she didn't throw her beer. She was enjoying it, so yeah.

"You're a party pooper, Mr. Julius," Dinah called out, then grinned and offered Priestly her beer. "They should! Well, aside from crimes. Always more complicated when things are stolen, and on fire." She smiled contentedly into the bonfire, a little buzzed. "This is cool, though. And very... awwww." Zo and Trucker were so glowing. "We need another toast. But I can't think of a new one."

"Mazel tov!" Dinah wasn't sure that one was universal, but hey, it couldn't hurt. "Bon chance! Yeah." She swiped her beer back, and took another sip. "Very glad no flowers die to give Zo a bouquet to throw. 'Cause that could've been awkward. All of us diving away at once. Or shoving to catch it."

"I doooon't," Dinah said, mimicking. Or, possibly, catching the vowels like a virus. "At least, not next! Jen can be next! Piper can be next! Julia needs a mommy..." She looked over at Tish and Julia, growing a little more sober. "Just, you know. I mean. Would you have made a grab for a garter?"

Okay, that had Dinah falling off her log, giggling, and almost spilling her beer. "Here! Takeit, take it, take..." She managed to get back on the log, and grinned. "So you do wanna get married? I just wanna boyfriend. Or a friendly boy. Ozzy! Or something."

"Some day," Dinah agreed. "When I'm, you know. A grown-up." She looked at Trucker and Zo. "Maybe not *that* grown-up. But still." She poked Priestly's side. "Is Tish... are you guys.. how are..."

She'd complete that sentence as soon as she figured out how to say it.

"But but but--" Dinah sounded like a broken motorboat. "No! You're not! It's not your fault! And she doesn't understand!" She scowled over at Tish, and started swaying to her feet. "I should explain it!"

That got him glomped. "What? Noooo! Then I'm crazy too! Bad crazy! I don't wanna be bad-crazy, Priestly!" Dinah finally pulled back, looking on the verge of tears. "It's not faiiiir. I just... No, see, 'cause...."

Dinah frowned, the "meta-and-shit" kind of pinging around her head and needing addressing, but the second part seemed even more important. "Go back to...? Fandom?"

"That's not .. crazy," Dinah said, frowning, and wishing she had either more or less of a beer buzz going. "I mean. Not if you're careful. And not if you go back, 'cause you want to work. Not because you think zombies are fun or the summer trauma is where you belong. But if you go back for Luke's, and the people... that's just... different. That's all."

"Oh, Priestly." Another hug, and Dinah patted at his hair, biting her lip. "I don't think there is an easy. I mean, I'm all meta and shit, and it's not easy. And... you're here, and there's no weird, and it's not easy. And." She frowned. "I'm gonna talk to Tish. Just, not in a mean way."

"Course not." Dinah nodded solemnly. "But yes. Hard questions. Gotta be asked. And all." Another hug, and then Dinah wove unsteadily to her feet. "Mission time."

Dinah wandered over and finally flopped down next to Tish and Julia. "Hmmm. Julia? Can I talk to Tish for a minute or two? And then come back and have you help me build a sandcastle?"

Julia looked from Tish to Dinah. "You gonna tell her she shouldn't have stopped being Priestly's girlfriend?"

"Julia," Tish sighed. "Go keep your dad and Piper from kissing too much."

"Eeeeeeeew," Julia said. She stood up, and whispered to Dinah very loudly: "You should tell her she shouldn't have stopped being Priestly's girlfriend. He's all mopey now."

Then she shot Tish a pointed look and jogged off.

"They're so cute at that age," Tish said. "And yet, so irritating."

"Yeeeah. And yet, sometimes, still so right." Dinah took a breath, and looked around. "I swear I'm not going to yell or anything. But I need to talk to you in private for a little bit, and explain a couple things Priestly might've left out. You deserve to know."

Tish looked at her for a long moment, then nodded. "I'd like to hear another side to this story." One, she hoped, that involved a lot less of people getting trapped in alternate universes and then DYING in them.

Dinah muttered, "You might not thank me afterward." But. She did deserve to know, and figure out whether she wanted to be with Priestly in spite of the craziness-that-was-not-his.

Dinah walked a little ways down the beach, until they weren't within earshot, and then turned around. The beer buzz was just about gone now. She rubbed at her arms in the chilling air. "Okay, first thing: Priestly isn't crazy. Second thing: everything he told you about what happened to him two weeks ago was true. Um, intense. But true. Third thing: I can prove at least part of it right this second. If you want me to."

Tish looked at her silently for a long moment.

"Alright, then. Let's see it."

Dinah looked down at the beach, and saw a small, broken blue seashell, about ten feet away. "Do you see that shell?" Not waiting for an answer, she pushed up on her arms, and her non-existent sleeves of her sundress. "No wires. No magnets. No hydraulics..."

She held out her hand, and the shell rose slowly in the air. Then zipped to land in her palm. Rose again to twirl in front of Tish's eyes, screened from everyone else's view. "So, um. This isn't magic. It just looks like it."

Tish reached out to take the shell, shooting a glance at Dinah to make sure it was okay. She looked over it, weighing it in her hand, her lips pursed.

It . . . looked legit. Which made approximately zero sense, but Tish was never the type to doubt her own senses.

She weighed the shell in her hand again, then looked up.

"He said he died."

Dinah let go of the shell so Tish could take it. Then winced.

"I didn't see it," she said, slowly. "I was in jail. I'd been there about two years. But someone I trust came and told me the day it happened." She sighed. "And then there was time travel, and I don't know the details, but. Some of the other people on the island... undid it, I guess. Because I remember being myself, but with a different life, for a week."

Which was... probably doing nothing for Tish's state of mind. Even if it did back up Priestly's sanity. Sort of.

"Okay, wait. He was gone for a week. How do you fit two years in jail into a week?"

Tish was trying, really. But her mind kept coming back to he said he died, and kind of shying away. The very idea of it hurt, and if she was completely honest with herself, she wasn't ready for a relationship that could hurt her that way.

"You change your memories." Dinah wished she had someone with more magic experience to back her up here. This was so not her deal. "So, I remembered things being really different from the first day that Priestly and I got there almost four years ago. But it only effected people on the island." She paused, re-ran that through her brain, and facepalmed. "No wonder you thought he was crazy. It is crazy. But. That's Fandom for you. Magic and time travel, and, uh. Craziness."

Tish held up the shell. "And people who can float things. And, I'm guessing, other people who look exactly like people you know."

Karla and Piper's resemblance, for instance, was downright uncanny.

"I'm sorry, Dinah, I know he's your best friend, but I don't know. I can't -- I can't stick with a guy who's going to go off and get killed every time he goes back to his high school for a party."

"Oh. Ow."

Dinah actually said that out loud. Because this was the third time Priestly had died. And Tish didn't even know that, so saying it might not happen again would be lying so much and saying he'd never go back would be another lie, and saying that if he stayed in Santa Cruz he'd be safe would be a lie, and it hurt, like a gut-punch, on Priestly's behalf.

(And maybe remembering that this was what broke Kyle's ability to cope too.)

"I. There's. Good things?" Dinah tried to find something. This was supposed to help. At least enough to make Tish think about it. "Getting to be little again. Getting to be flying ponies..." Oh, crap. She rubbed at her eyes. "Tish, please. He deserves a chance. He really, really cares about you."

Dinah wanted to argue that Tish owed it to Priestly or something. But the thing was, she didn't. "I think you're not giving yourself enough credit," she said after a long moment. "But I do get that." Then more quietly, "Thanks for listening, I guess."

She wanted to ask if Tish would be friends with him, still. But she was afraid of the answer, and it made her angry.

That was about all Dinah could salvage out of this. "When you do know, tell him. Don't tell him anything until you're sure." She took a breath. "It's hard to take stuff back, once you've said no."

She turned and looked back up the beach, to Julia waving. "I'm going to go play with Julia now."
