The commitment ceremony had gone off without a hitch. Priestly and the rest of the Beach City Grill crew had now seen rather a whole lot more of Trucker and Zo than they'd ever thought they would, but the horses didn't seem to mind much, and they were now both dressed again in very nice, matching linen outfits, and Priestly was reminding himself just why he was a punk instead of a hippie.
"If I ever get married," he said to Jen as they all gathered around a bonfire not far from the waves, "I'm so not going with matching outfits."
"If you ever get married," Jen said, leaning towards him from where she was snugged up again the guy Priestly was never NOT going to think of as Fuzzy, "you're going to be the one wearing the white dress."
Priestly tilted his head. "That's probably true." He looked across the fire to where Tish was showing Julia how to play cat's-cradle and tried not to sigh.
When in doubt, draw attention to yourself. He stood up, lifting his beer bottle high. "I'd like to propose a toast!"
The group groaned cheerfully. This was fifteenth or sixteenth toast of the night.
"To good friends," Priestly continued, gesturing around at the group with his beer. "To finding the perfect partner," this to Trucker and Zo specifically, who grinned back at him like fools. "And . . . to setting things on fire!" And he flung his beer bottle into the flames and threw his hands in the air. "WOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
There was a faint possibility he was overdoing it, yes.

"Your friends are weird," Fuzzy noted to Jen.
"That's why I love 'em," Jen said.

12/8/12 07:26 (UTC)"Julia," Tish sighed. "Go keep your dad and Piper from kissing too much."
"Eeeeeeeew," Julia said. She stood up, and whispered to Dinah very loudly: "You should tell her she shouldn't have stopped being Priestly's girlfriend. He's all mopey now."
Then she shot Tish a pointed look and jogged off.
"They're so cute at that age," Tish said. "And yet, so irritating."

12/8/12 07:35 (UTC)Dinah walked a little ways down the beach, until they weren't within earshot, and then turned around. The beer buzz was just about gone now. She rubbed at her arms in the chilling air. "Okay, first thing: Priestly isn't crazy. Second thing: everything he told you about what happened to him two weeks ago was true. Um, intense. But true. Third thing: I can prove at least part of it right this second. If you want me to."

12/8/12 07:39 (UTC)"Alright, then. Let's see it."

12/8/12 07:42 (UTC)She held out her hand, and the shell rose slowly in the air. Then zipped to land in her palm. Rose again to twirl in front of Tish's eyes, screened from everyone else's view. "So, um. This isn't magic. It just looks like it."
(no subject)
12/8/12 07:45 (UTC)It . . . looked legit. Which made approximately zero sense, but Tish was never the type to doubt her own senses.
She weighed the shell in her hand again, then looked up.
"He said he died."

12/8/12 07:48 (UTC)"I didn't see it," she said, slowly. "I was in jail. I'd been there about two years. But someone I trust came and told me the day it happened." She sighed. "And then there was time travel, and I don't know the details, but. Some of the other people on the island... undid it, I guess. Because I remember being myself, but with a different life, for a week."
Which was... probably doing nothing for Tish's state of mind. Even if it did back up Priestly's sanity. Sort of.

12/8/12 07:55 (UTC)Tish was trying, really. But her mind kept coming back to he said he died, and kind of shying away. The very idea of it hurt, and if she was completely honest with herself, she wasn't ready for a relationship that could hurt her that way.

12/8/12 08:06 (UTC)Karla and Piper's resemblance, for instance, was downright uncanny.
"I'm sorry, Dinah, I know he's your best friend, but I don't know. I can't -- I can't stick with a guy who's going to go off and get killed every time he goes back to his high school for a party."
(no subject)
12/8/12 08:15 (UTC)Dinah actually said that out loud. Because this was the third time Priestly had died. And Tish didn't even know that, so saying it might not happen again would be lying so much and saying he'd never go back would be another lie, and saying that if he stayed in Santa Cruz he'd be safe would be a lie, and it hurt, like a gut-punch, on Priestly's behalf.
(And maybe remembering that this was what broke Kyle's ability to cope too.)
"I. There's. Good things?" Dinah tried to find something. This was supposed to help. At least enough to make Tish think about it. "Getting to be little again. Getting to be flying ponies..." Oh, crap. She rubbed at her eyes. "Tish, please. He deserves a chance. He really, really cares about you."

12/8/12 21:22 (UTC)She wanted to ask if Tish would be friends with him, still. But she was afraid of the answer, and it made her angry.
